Ravidas is the second appointment in this Teacher of Wisdom series. A series of rituals dedicated to the spirit of Wisdom. We will gather upon sacred days dedicated to the teacher and spiritually study what the spirit of a real teacher really is.
Guru Ravidas was notable as one of the most radical teachers ever to appear in India. Figures like him rock the boat of established order and are forerunners of spiritual and social revolutionary maneuvers. Though his poetry still exists, much was destroyed by forces that opposed his vision equality and favored their elitist structures to stay in place.
The life of Ravidas was a testament to the vision of undying truth within all beings – a truth that lies oppressed beneath the man-made separative constructs that are rampant in organised societies. That vision of truth that Ravi Das saw is known as the inner Guru Tatva – that is the element of the true power and weight of the spirit. His followers are marked by his vision of seeing beneath the surfaces and carry his trait of exposing injustice, left right and center.
What we can learn from Ravidas is that the fabric of our outer lives is a reminder of the borders that exist within us. If grace of Heart is to remain pointing the finger and ranting against the injustices we see – should not be at the exclusion of an inner investigation of where those injustices exist within ourselves.
Ravidas remained ever sober of the situations of life, along with all its injustices. He did not turn a blind eye, nor did he take an uninvolved pacifistic stance. He kept an lucid eye upon the situation he lived within; whilst at the same time remaining a mystic and a romantic at heart.
His Heart felt the tragedies of existence whilst at the same time remaining focussed on the magical life and poetry of the mystic traveler. This Tantric position that he stood within, can serve as an inspiration to navigate through our lives – an inspired vision of how the opposites of life are entangled in an eternal dance. Just like two snakes uniting.
Ravidas’ vision can be summarised with the tantric concept of Tadaruup: many beats, but only one Heart. His quest, as that of his followers, was to come to a unification of the hearts.
